Association of Folic Acid Levels with Destructive Changes in the Gallbladder Wall in Elderly Comorbid Patients

The timeliness of the study is explained by high mortality rates after surgery for acute cholecystitis: while the general figure equals 1.3 %, among the elderly it increases to 25–27 %. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association of serum folic acid concentration with the morphological form of acute cholecystitis in comorbid patients over 60 years of age to determine the potential significance of this indicator as an auxiliary marker of destructive changes in the gallbladder wall. Materials and methods. The study examined 90 patients aged over 60 years of age, comparable in age, gender and comorbidity with acute calculous cholecystitis, operated by laparoscopic cholecystectomy, divided into three subgroups according to the degree of inflammation (n = 30 – phlegmonous, n = 30 – gangrenous, n = 30 – catarrhal cholecystitis). The control group consisted of 30 patients with chronic calculous cholecystitis. Results. Statistically significant differences in folic acid levels between the groups were revealed: the maximum was in phlegmonous cholecystitis (15.2 ± 6.2 ng/ml), the minimum was in gangrenous cholecystitis (1.9 ± 0.6 ng/ml).
