A Modern Method of Tongue Myotonometry for Assessing its Morphofunctional State

To measure the tongue muscle tone, the tongue myotonometry method was used, which involves measuring the tongue muscle pressure on the dental arches. This method was developed to clinically assess the tongue's morphofunctional state and improve the diagnosis and treatment planning of orofacial dysfunctions in 148 patients. The patients were divided into two groups: 58 patients with intact dental arches and 90 patients with end-stage defects of the lower dental arch. It was found that the myotonometry method of the tongue proposed by us has sensitivity and objectivity for analyzing changes in its myotonus, which were expressed in a significant decrease in the tongue pressure force in patients with extended defects of the lower dentition in the area of premolars and molars in all three measured parameters against the background of a high prevalence of macroglossia in this group. It has been established that a comprehensive morphofunctional assessment of the tongue should include a study of the volume of the oral cavity as its functional space in order to objectify the clinical picture of macroglossia and the condition of the tongue's myotonia.
