Frequency of Maxillofacial Surgery Complications in Diabetic Patients

Research into diabetes is important in terms of maxillofacial surgery, where impaired reparative processes and a susceptibility to infection can contribute to the development of complications. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of diabetes mellitus on the risk of postoperative complications in patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery. A search of international and domestic databases for the period 2015–2025 was conducted. A total of 25 studies were identified, covering 4920 patients, of whom 2028 had diabetes mellitus. Complications were found to occur in 26.13 % of patients with diabetes and 28.04 % of those without diabetes, corresponding to an absolute risk difference of -1.91 percentage points. The statistical analysis conducted did not confirm significant differences (χ² with Yates' correction, p = 0.148), and the odds ratio calculation (OR = 0.91; 95 % CI: 0.80-1.03) indicates the absence of statistically significant associations, with a trend toward a slightly lower incidence of complications in patients with diabetes compared to the control group. An additional analysis of HbA1c levels did not demonstrate a consistent direct relationship with the incidence of complications.
