Colotomy for Colonic Foreign Body Retrieval: How to Finish the Operation?

The study is devoted to the analysis of complications in patients with foreign objects in the colon (FOC) who underwent surgical treatment to remove the foreign body. The aim of the work is to evaluate postoperative complications in patients who underwent surgical removal of FOC by laparotomy and colotomy, depending on whether the operation ended with the creation of a colostomy or not. Materials and methods. A retrospective study from 2014 to 2024 included 32 patients with FOC. Inclusion criteria: the presence of FOC in the patient; patients with FOC who underwent inpatient treatment in the proctology department; absence of surgical complications (peritonitis, intestinal obstruction, profuse bleeding) in the victim upon admission to a medical facility in the presence of FOC; patients with FOC who underwent laparotomy and colotomy to remove a foreign object. Results. When analyzing the results, no significant difference was found in the number of postoperative wound complications between stoma patients and those who had their colotomy incision sutured (χ2 = 0.2576; р = 0.6117). Conclusion. Emergency surgical intervention in the form of laparotomy and colotomy remains the option of choice for the extraction of FOC if less invasive techniques cannot be used. The development of clear indications for the creation of a colostomy during surgical removal of FOC by colotomy is necessary to unify the surgeon's actions.
