The aim of this study was to assess the informative value of the 6-minute walk test in determining cardiovascular risk in persons over 55 years of age with abdominal obesity.

Subjects and methods: The study enrolled 70 patients, including 17 men (24&amp;nbsp;%) and 53 women (76&amp;nbsp;%) over 55 years of age. All subjects under study had collection of complaints and anamnesis, anthropometry, 6-minute walking test, biochemical blood tests for glucose, creatinine, lipoproteins and total cholesterol were performed, triplex scanning of brachiocephalic arteries, echocardiography, noninvasive angioscans on the diagnostic complex &amp;laquo;AngioScan-01&amp;raquo; were performed.

Results: All subjects were divided into 2 subgroups: with AO &amp;ndash; 52 patients, and without it &amp;ndash; 18 patients. Patients with AO had a greater number of conditions associated with increased risk of death from cardiovascular complications. Smoking, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, general obesity, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, coronary heart disease, and chronic kidney disease stage 3 were statistically significantly more common in them. The study showed that distance in the 6-minute walk test is decreased in patients with AO, and the decrease in this distance correlates with lower indices of endothelium-dependent vasodilation.

Conclusions: the 6-minute walk test is a simple functional test that can be used as an additional criterion of cardiovascular risk assessment in outpatient settings.
